Programs Booth House Booth House provides supported housing for 20 formerly homeless senior women. The Rita Thompson Residence The Rita Thompson Residence provides 34 men with an opportunity to live in their own apartments while receiving treatment and support for mental health, physical health and substance use problems.

Many of the men who call this residence home made their way there via our Targeted Emergency Diversion TED program, Special Care for Men and now are living in their own housing. The privilege of being part of their journey pf recovery is unbelievably rewarding.

The Rita Thompson Residence is also the first program we have operated in partnership with John Howard Society of Ottawa but we hope it will not be the last since this partnership so greatly enriches our capacity to provide care. True to its title, the program provides opportunity for people who are struggling with compulsive drinking to have to alcohol administration in addition to health and social supports.

Currently operating only 12 beds, this program is primed for an expansion and redevelopment in the upcoming year. The Oaks is a bit of a media darling whose credits include innumerable interviews and even a documentary about the amazing success of the residents.

The Ottawa Mission Primary Care Clinic The primary care clinic is open 7 days a week to provide health care to homeless people who do not have access to family medical care. In addition to primary care, the clinic also hosts an HIV clinic and mental health clinic.

Our amazing team of nurse practitioners not only run the primary care clinic but, visit people in shelters who need care but are unable to attend the clinic.

This flexible, patient centered approach to health care not only improves the health of homeless people, but has been highly effective in reducing unnecessary emergency room visits.

Special Care for Men Located on the 3rd floor at the Salvation Army Booth Centre, the Special Care Unit for Men provides space for 30 men needing intensive supports for mental health, substance abuse and mental illness. In partnership with the Salvation Army, we are commited to helping men living with complex health needs to exit homelessness and to find housing with the right kinds of supports needed for them to have a healthy future.

Special Care for Women Special Care for Women provides treatment, care and support from a team of nurses, doctors, client care workers, peer workers, and case managers to 16 women who are homeless and living with complex health needs.

Located in the basement of the Shepherds of Good Hope, the lavender walls of the unit represent the inner beauty of the ladies who reside there. The TED program consists of two services. The first being 24 hour monitoring for homeless people under the influence of drugs and alcohol which allows them to safely detox in the community rather than a hospital ER.

This includes nursing, mental health services, intensive case management, peer support for appointments, nurse practitioners, psychiatry, access to an internist and medical monitoring. I had a heart and kidney operation when I was two month old because my mother drank and did drugs when she was pregnant with me, so I was in the hospital for five years on and off, I would have to go to Montreal.

When I was six or seven my sisters, that are three years older, made me smoke cigarettes so I would not tell on them, but my mother found out and she started giving me cigarettes at that age, but she did not want my sisters to smoke. I would go to the dentist alone, my mother would not take me.

I was not like the other kids because of the operation so I was made fun of by the other kids, I would breath heavily even when I was staying still. I moved back to my father when I was 7 or 8 years old; my father did not expect me to go live with him but my mother did not want to take care of me.

I did well in school, my father was the shop teacher and his now wife the grade 5 and 6 teacher. I remember him playing with other kids a lot.

He was busy most of the time. When I moved back to my mother I got worse cause I started taking marijuana and drinking staying up all night then my father called or my mother just sent me back at 14 years old.

I started baby sitting so I could have something to eat every day. I would just take my clothes and leave right away. I was hanging around with my cousin who is five years older and she was drinking every day and I would get invited to go to the legion and bar, we would steal almost every day so we could drink.

I got my first job at 19 as a stock boy. I got a place when I got here but I moved out after 2 months then I was homeless sleeping outside and at the shelters, drinking every day.
